Standing on God’s Promises

How well acquainted are you with the promises of God?

Look at the refrain of the classic hymn Standing on the Promises by Russell Kelso Carter (1886)

Standing, standing,

Standing on the promises of God, my Savior;

Standing, standing,

I’m standing on the promises of God.

Christian, how often do you meditate on the promises of God offered to you through Jesus Christ? I find that some Christians spend a lot of time memorizing facts and information about the Bible or Bible doctrines (which does have great benefits), but not as much time committing to memory the clear promises of God given to every believer.

Are you truly standing on the promises of God? Here are some things to consider about God’s promises.

#1 – God’s promises are sure because these promises come from the God who cannot lie.

“in which it is impossible for God to lie” (Hebrews 6:18).

Verse 1 of Standing on the Promises

Standing on the promises of Christ, my King,

Through eternal ages let his praises ring;

Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing,

Standing on the promises of God

#2 – God’s promises give us hope and comfort

“a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone…” (Hebrews 6:19-20).

Verse 2 of Standing on the Promises

Standing on the promises that cannot fail.

When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,

By the living Word of God I shall prevail,

Standing on the promises of God.

#3 – God’s promises are anchors to our souls that securely tie us to heaven while we’re here on earth.

“We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul….” (Hebrews 6:19).

Verse 3 of Standing on the Promises

Standing on the promises of Christ, the Lord,

Bound to him eternally by love’s strong cord,

Overcoming daily with the Spirit’s sword,

Standing on the promises of God.

#4 – God’s promises give us the power to keep on living for Jesus “until the end.”

“And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end, so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises” (Hebrews 6:11-12).

His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire (2 Peter 1:3-4).

Verse 4 of Standing on the Promises

Standing on the promises I cannot fall,

Listening every moment to the Spirit’s call,

Resting in my Savior as my all in all,

Standing on the promises of God.

How about taking time today to meditate on these passages about the promises of God? It will be well worth your time. When you’re feeling great, meditate on the promises of God. When you’re sad and hurting, go to God’s promises. When you’re afraid, stand on the promises. When you stand on the mountaintops of victory, remember to stand on God’s promises.

In the next article, we are going to consider the faithfulness of God in connection to His promises and what that means to us.
