“Great is Thy Faithfulness.”
Our God is faithful. We can completely trust our God. He is the same yesterday, today and forever (Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8). He always keeps His promises. He cannot lie.
Our God is faithful no matter what spiritual condition we are in. He remains the same. Let’s take a look at several scriptures about God’s faithfulness and see that God is faithful before, during and after we sin. And as we walk with Him and await Jesus’ return, we can trust that God is always faithful until He takes us home.
God is faithful – Before we sin, and while we are being tempted.
When we are facing Satan’s temptation, we must remember the faithfulness of God. He is there to help us if we will but accept His help. “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it” (1 Corinthians 10:13). Paul adds in another letter that “But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one” (2 Thessalonians 3:3).
You can trust that when you’re tempted, there is a way to escape. He is there to guard you.
God’s faithfulness is not in question, ours is.
God is faithful – Even while we are sinning.
In Paul’s letters to Timothy and Titus, he gives 5 “trustworthy” statements. This is one of them. “The saying is trustworthy, for: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself” (2 Timothy 2:11-13).
A trustworthy statement – You can count on it. Even if you and I are faith-LESS, he is faith-FULL. We may deny Him, but He cannot deny Himself.
God’s faithfulness is not in question, ours is.
God is faithful – While we are seeking to come back to Him.
God was faithful when we were told His words of truth. He was faithful while we were being enticed and giving in to our lusts, selfishness and pride. The Lord was faithful while we were away from Him in the far country trying to live on pig slop rather than on the blessings of His table. And when we come to our senses and begin the journey home, He is faithful. He will run, greet us, fall on our neck and kiss us. He promises that heaven will rejoice. That is a promise God will keep. We don’t deserve a bit of it, but God promised it. And God is faithful. He doesn’t break promises.
Listen to the faithfulness of God promised to us when we want to leave our sin and come back to Him. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). “Therefore he (Jesus) had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people (Hebrews 2:17).
God’s faithfulness is not in question, ours is.
God is faithful – Even while we’re standing in the wake of sin’s consequences.
Whether we are facing the consequences of our sin, or we are like Jeremiah and bearing the brunt of another’s unfaithfulness, either way, God is faithful. Listen to the words of Jeremiah as he walked through the smoke, rubble and death of a devastated Jerusalem. He cried his eyes out. He lamented from A to Z, but in his pain Jeremiah looked to the faithfulness of his God which gave him hope!
So I say, “My endurance has perished; so has my hope from the LORD.” Remember my affliction and my wanderings, the wormwood and the gall! My soul continually remembers it and is bowed down within me. But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him” (Jeremiah 3:18-24).
God’s faithfulness is not in question, ours is.
God is faithful – Until Jesus comes again.
If God was faithful before, during and after my sin, will He not be faithful to help me grow and gain spiritual strength to serve Him? If God was faithful as we stood in sin’s consequences, will not be much more faithful to help prepare us for a day when sin will be no more? Absolutely! Listen to Paul write about the faithfulness of God in connection to His commitment to our spiritual growth. God promised that He is preparing us for the coming of Jesus.
Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it” (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24).
Did we hear that? God is faithful, He will surely do it.
God’s faithfulness is not in question, ours is.
